Basic Skill Practice

The end of the school year marks the beginning of a very busy season of activities for parents and children.  With this in mind, we would like to remind you to continue to work on basic skills with your child.  Your help this summer will allow your child to further succeed in the academic year to come.  Below are some ideas to help your child remember all that they have learned this year.

·       1 to 1 correspondence—have your child to count items as he/she sets the table for meals, have your child to count barrettes, beads, and ponytail holders, have your child to count cars and toys that are alike.

·       Addition—have your child to add food/fruit items that are alike (6 green grapes + 2 red grapes=8 grapes altogether)

·       Letter recognition—ask your child to identify letters in words around them.  Play games like “I spy”, or “letter search”, where you tell your child to find a particular letter.

·       Purchase or create ten to fifteen piece puzzles.

·       Read at least one book per day.  Reading to your child daily will promote a love for literacy and will help your child in his reading abilities.

·       Turn the television and game systems off!  Give your child activities that will promote critical thinking and reasoning skills.

·       Get out of the house and enjoy the warmer weather.  Go to the local park, take walks, talk about the environment.
